Welcome!
It’s so nice to meet you here!
A Little About Me:
After I earned my M.Ed. from Vanderbilt University, I was all ready to start my career as a child and adolescent counselor. I set out with my diploma and 250 professionally printed resumes. (Yes, that was back when you had them professionally printed because no one had a computer at home.) And started looking for a job.
Unfortunately, I had a Masters's in Education, not a Masters's in Social Work. Therefore I could not accept insurance payments at that time.
Just to earn a little extra money, a friend suggested a nanny job, just to tide things over. I was shocked to find that I would be earning twice what I would as a counselor, and I got to work intensively with one kid.
I was hooked.
Since then I have worked with seven families, guiding them through pregnancy through college admissions. I have even cared for the second generation, singing with the babies of the babies I rocked.
After my last family grew up, the ACA made it impossible to carry my own health insurance. So, I joined my local school system. I currently work for Metro Nashville Public Schools where I do everything from creating posters and manipulatives (Thanks Reese Witherspoon for buying us a Glowforge!) and filling in for absent teachers to helping calm students and supervising the cafeteria. (Honestly, that's where I get the best “things I never thought I would say!”)
All the while, I have been available to help teachers, friends, and former charges as they navigate parenting. I finally thought: “Hey, I bet there are others out there I can help.”
And here is the newsletter to help you!
How This Works
At the top of each new entry, you will see a series of bold letters. They stand for the following:
B: Babies
To: Toddlers
PS: Pre-School
C: Children
PT: Pre-Teen
Te: Teenagers
SN: Special Needs
As much as possible, I will try to include all the age groups in each newsletter. After all, I hate getting a bunch of newsletters that don’t apply to me. I just bet you do too! But occasionally, there will be issues that don’t touch on one or more of the age groups. For example, you don’t really need to know how to teach LGBTQ+ sensitivity to your baby. Because babies don’t care. In a similar way, you won’t need teething tips for your Pre-Schooler. (Although, oddly enough, you might need them for your teen if they are cutting their wisdom teeth…)
And, if you have any questions or issues you could use some help on, leave a message in the comments. I really do want to help. We have all been through so much in the past two years. Let’s make this family thing a little bit easier.
